Why Spain? Everything About Life in Barcelona

October 10, 2026 · 15:05

What is it really like to emigrate to Spain, live in Barcelona and build a new life in Europe? 🇪🇸🇹🇷 In this video, drawing on my own experience, I talk about the questions Turks living in Spain and Barcelona often ask, the pros and cons of emigrating, and the differences between Catalonia and the rest of Spain.
In this episode of Life in Spain | Q&A #02, we go beyond Barcelona and also look at life in Sitges, Tarragona, Girona, Madrid, Sant Pere de Ribes, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Castelldefels and other towns in the area.
I get lots of questions from people thinking about moving to Spain, from Turks who already live here and from anyone researching life in Europe. In this episode I answer those questions and share what I've observed while living in Spain.
What are the pros and cons of emigrating to Spain?
From the outside, living abroad can mean new opportunities, different cultures and a freer life. But emigrating is about much more than changing countries.
Getting used to a new routine, learning a language, building a social circle, dealing with a different bureaucracy and leaving behind the way of life you know are all part of the process.
In this video I share what life in Spain has given me, the challenges I've faced and how my perspective has changed since moving from Türkiye to Spain.
Barcelona, Sitges, Tarragona, Girona or Madrid?
Choosing the city you'll live in can be one of the most important decisions you make in Spain.
Barcelona's lively city life, the seaside-town feel of Sitges, Tarragona's historic character, Girona's distinctive lifestyle and Madrid's big-city energy each offer a very different experience.
Around Barcelona, towns like Sant Pere de Ribes, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Castelldefels are also worth considering if you'd rather live outside the city center.
As I compare these cities and areas based on my own observations, we also talk about how there's no single right place to live for everyone.
How is Catalonia different from the rest of Spain?
Spain doesn't have one uniform way of life. Catalonia's language, cultural identity, traditions and daily habits can differ from those in other parts of the country.
I also look at the role Catalan and Spanish play in daily life in and around Barcelona, the regional cultures and the different lifestyles you'll find from city to city.
Does life in Europe really live up to expectations?
For many people who want to live in Europe, Spain is an appealing country thanks to its climate, social life, Mediterranean culture and wide choice of cities.
But when you decide to live in Spain, you need to think beyond the beautiful scenery and holiday vibe: the cost of living, job opportunities, the adjustment period and the personal impact of emigrating matter too.
My goal in this video isn't to praise Spain or to criticize it. It's to share my experience as someone who lives here, the good and the bad.
I hope this conversation is useful for Turks who want to move to Spain, Turks living in Barcelona and anyone thinking about building a new life in Europe.
Do you live in Spain too? If you had to choose between Barcelona, Madrid, Girona, Tarragona and Sitges, which would you pick?
What do you think is the biggest advantage of emigrating, and the hardest part?
