Making Music at Home Is Easy, Being a Musician Is Hard!

September 11, 2026 · 13:04

Making music and producing songs at home has never been easier. But can you really record songs in your bedroom, upload them to Spotify and become a successful musician or star?
In this video, drawing on my experience in the music industry, I talk about the most common mistakes independent musicians make, and why producing songs alone isn't enough to succeed on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital music platforms.
Today you can make music at home with a computer, a microphone and a few pieces of software. Mixing, mastering, arranging and even AI-assisted music production are far more accessible than ever. But competition in the music industry is growing just as fast.
When thousands of new songs are uploaded to digital music platforms every week, the idea that "if I release enough songs, one of them is bound to hit" isn't enough to build a sustainable music career.
In the video I explain why it matters for independent musicians to build their own audience on social media first, instead of constantly uploading songs to Spotify. A real fan base on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and other social platforms can drive organic outside traffic to platforms like Spotify and Apple Music when your music comes out.
Making good music is important, of course. But in today's music industry, a good song alone isn't enough to succeed.
Producers, songwriters, composers, arrangers, record labels, music distribution companies, PR, digital marketing and social media strategy are still essential parts of a music career.
So what should an independent musician do?
Keep making music at home. Keep improving. Try new songs. But instead of uploading everything you make to Spotify right away, test it on social media. Create content, get to know your audience and watch which of your songs people actually respond to.
Because today, a successful music career isn't just about how many songs you produce; it's also about how many people you can reach with your music and whether you can build a real audience that's waiting for you.
As someone who spent many years in radio and the digital music industry, and who now works in music strategy, digital distribution and artist management, I wanted to highlight some of the mistakes musicians make, especially early in their careers.
The point of this video isn't "don't make music at home." Quite the opposite: create, experiment and grow, but don't think of a music career as nothing more than uploading songs to Spotify.
What do you think? Can an independent musician really build a big career today without a record label? Let's discuss in the comments.
