August in Spain: How Does Life Change in and Around Barcelona?

July 22, 2026 · 9:22

One of the things that surprised me most after moving to Spain was how life practically slows to a crawl in August.
Spending my first summer in Spain as a digital nomad, I was genuinely surprised to see banks, small businesses, family firms, accountants, lawyers and many offices closed for weeks.
In this vlog I share my own experience and explain why life stops in Spain in August, the historical reasons behind it, and the key details anyone thinking of living in Spain, moving to Barcelona or working remotely (Digital Nomad) should know.
As a tourist you might not even notice. But once you start living here, you see banking, official paperwork, appointments, company formation, accounting and many everyday tasks slow down considerably.
📍 In this video I talk about:
Why do so many businesses close in Spain in August?
Where did Spain's long summer holiday culture come from?
How is life in and around Barcelona affected?
What should you watch out for living as a Digital Nomad?
Key details for anyone moving to Spain
My own experiences and observations
