Spotify Marquee is a powerful tool that puts your new release in front of an audience already interested in you. But it doesn't work for every artist or in every market. I explain from inside the industry, without the hype, what Marquee really does, who can use it and why it can't target Türkiye.
Spotify Marquee is Spotify's own promotional product. It shows your new release as a full-screen sponsored recommendation inside the Spotify app to users who have listened to you before or who listen to similar artists. So it reaches people already inclined toward your music, not a cold audience. That's where Marquee's real strength lies: rather than buying a one-off play, it aims to bring interested listeners back to your new song and turn them into lasting listeners.
This sets Marquee apart from Spotify advertising (Spotify Ads), which reaches a broad audience. Spotify Ads opens you up to new ears, while Marquee deepens interest you've already earned. They aren't alternatives; set up correctly, they're two separate layers that complement each other.
The most critical fact: Marquee CAN'T target Türkiye. Türkiye isn't on Marquee's list of targetable markets. Even if you bill through Spain and run Marquee, the campaign goes to markets like Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and France; it never reaches listeners in Türkiye. For an artist whose audience is mostly in Türkiye, that means zero benefit with the core audience. That's why, for most Turkish artists, Marquee is something you can switch on but that doesn't deliver.
What makes Marquee pointless is that it can't target Türkiye; what makes it worthwhile is that it can reach your real audience abroad. If an artist has a market abroad, say Germany, with at least 5,000 monthly active listeners, that's exactly where Marquee comes in. It reminds listeners in that market of your new release with a full-screen recommendation and turns them into lasting listeners.
So the strategy is this: while you nurture your audience in Türkiye with Spotify advertising and other channels, you use Marquee to lock in your audience in a foreign market where you've reached 5,000 listeners. Pick the wrong market and every cent is wasted; pick the right one and Marquee becomes one of the most effective tools for growing your audience abroad.
Marquee isn't available to everyone or for every song. Setting up a campaign without meeting these three requirements wastes money and time.
A concrete example: an artist with 300 total listeners can't cross the 5,000 threshold in any market, so they aren't eligible for Marquee. Another artist may have 12,000 total listeners, but if nearly all of them are in Türkiye, they still won't reach 5,000 in any targetable market. That's why "are we eligible for Marquee?" is the first question to answer, long before any campaign. And that's exactly where I start the process, by looking at the artist's listener breakdown by market.
Before recommending Marquee to an artist, I check their Spotify for Artists data to see which countries their listeners are in, which market crosses the 5,000 threshold and whether the release is still within the eligible window. If they're eligible, we go with Marquee; if not, I build the path to bring that foreign audience up to the 5,000 threshold first, using Spotify advertising, the right distribution and a holistic marketing plan.
For artists whose audience is mostly in Türkiye and who aren't eligible for Marquee, there's often a more accessible starting point: Spotify Discovery Mode. Discovery Mode isn't an ad but an algorithmic visibility signal; it works in more than 90 markets, including Türkiye, and its cost is a commission rather than an upfront budget. I explain how it differs from Marquee on the Spotify Discovery Mode page.
I run Marquee, Spotify ads and distribution through my US company, Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager), and the Gizli Medya infrastructure in Türkiye. I prefer to work in depth with a small number of projects, because with tools like Marquee the real difference isn't in switching it on, but in switching it on in the right market at the right time.

The artist needs at least 5,000 monthly active listeners in the target market. That's not total listeners but listeners in that specific market. For example, if you're targeting Germany, those 5,000 monthly active listeners have to be in Germany. Artists with high totals but nearly all of them in Türkiye often aren't even eligible.
No. Marquee is designed for new releases and usually has to start within the first ~18 days after release. It won't work for an older song released months ago. That's why Marquee needs to be planned as part of the release plan, before the song is even out.
