Spotify Ads Guide: How to Advertise on Spotify and What It Costs

Serdar Sağlam, Music Strategist · Updated: July 30, 2026

Most articles about Spotify advertising online repeat the same lines: "the targeting is incredibly powerful," "listeners are already in music mode," "apply now." I'm going to do something different here. I'll give you real numbers: how much each format costs to reach 1,000 people, what the CPM is, what the CTR is, what the minimum budget is, which file to prepare at which size and how many days it takes for a campaign to go live.

These numbers aren't estimates. They're the average of 36 campaigns and 58 ad sets completed to date on the Spotify Ads account I run on behalf of my own company, Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager) (USA). I also publish the same data with a live calculator at digitalent.music/spotify-ads.

What is Spotify Ads, and why does it work?

Spotify Ads is Spotify's own advertising platform. It lets you show ads in audio, video, display and carousel formats to listeners on the free tier. The ad's click destination is a Spotify link. So interested listeners don't land on a social media profile; they go straight to the song's play page.

There's one reason this tool works so well in music: context. When someone sees an ad on Instagram, they're shopping, reading the news or looking at a friend's photo. When they see an ad on Spotify, their headphones are already on and they're listening to music at that very moment. It's the moment they're most open to a new song recommendation. It's the purest form of what we in the industry call "the right audience."

Let's be clear: Spotify ads don't buy streams. An ad puts your song in front of a real user who's likely to enjoy your music. If that person clicks and listens, that's genuine engagement, and the algorithm sees that signal. It has nothing to do with bots or bought streams, and it never should.

Can you advertise on Spotify from Türkiye?

The short answer: not through the self-serve platform. Spotify's ad platform isn't directly available in Türkiye. An artist or production company in Türkiye can't open an account in their own name and set up a campaign.

I run these campaigns through my company in the USA, Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager). Because the account is US-based, the platform is available, yet targeting can cover more than 180 countries, including Türkiye. The ad copy is written in Turkish, the voiceover is recorded in Turkish and the campaign targets listeners in Türkiye. In short, I open up a channel for you that isn't accessible from Türkiye. I described the full scope of the service on my Spotify Advertising page.

4 ad formats and their specs

Spotify Ads has four main formats, and each reaches listeners in a different context. We can build a campaign around a single format or combine them.

1. Audio (audio ad + companion image)

A 15 to 30 second audio ad that plays between songs, shown alongside a companion image on screen. Its biggest advantage is that it reaches listeners even while Spotify runs in the background: while they're driving, walking or working.

  • Length: 15-30 seconds
  • Audio format: MP3 or WAV, 192 kbps or higher
  • Companion image: 640x640 pixels, JPG or PNG
  • Best for: Single releases, brand storytelling

2. Video

A 15 to 30 second video ad. It only plays when the listener is actively looking at the Spotify screen. That makes its reach narrower, but the quality of attention is high.

  • Length: 15-30 seconds
  • Resolution: 1280x720, 16:9
  • Format: MP4, H.264
  • Best for: Music video promotion, tour announcements, premieres

3. Display

A static image ad. It offers a low CPM and broad reach. This is the format that reaches the most people per dollar of budget.

  • Size: 640x640 pixels
  • Format: JPG or PNG, up to 200 KB
  • Click destination: Spotify song or artist link
  • Best for: Growing your profile, retargeting

4. Carousel

A format that shows 2 to 6 images in a swipeable carousel. Each card can have its own link and its own call to action. Ideal for an album tracklist, tour dates or merch.

  • Number of cards: 2-6 images
  • Size: 640x640 pixels per card
  • Call to action: Separate URL per card
  • Best for: Album releases, tour promotion

How much reach does each format deliver?

This table is information most artists can't find anywhere. The figures below are the average of 36 campaigns and 58 ad sets run on the Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager) account.

FormatCost per 1,000 reachCPMCTRAdvantage
Display1,71 $1,20 $%1,65Highest reach per dollar
Carousel~2,10 $~1,50 $~%1,80Multiple stories, separate calls to action
Video2,61 $2,49 $%1,49Active on-screen attention
Audio5,77 $3,70 $%2,99Highest click-through rate

Source: Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager) Spotify Ads account, average of 36 campaigns and 58 ad sets. The Carousel row is an industry estimate; our account hasn't yet collected enough data on this format. Figures vary by market, artist and season and are not guaranteed.

Two clear conclusions come out of the table. First, the cheapest reach is in Display. You reach 1,000 people for $1.71. A $1,000 budget on Display alone means roughly 580,000 unique reach. Second, the highest intent is in Audio. Its cost per reach is about three times higher, but its click-through rate is nearly double. In other words, Audio reaches fewer people, but the people it reaches are far more likely to click.

The right setup usually means using both together: Display introduces you to a broad audience, and Audio converts the high-intent listeners.

Budget, duration and minimum threshold

The minimum campaign budget for Spotify Ads is $500. This isn't an arbitrary floor. The algorithm needs a certain volume of data to learn who's clicking and optimize delivery. With smaller budgets, the campaign ends before completing the learning phase and the money is spent inefficiently.

In practice, the most common starting budget is around $1,000. On duration, there's a critical detail: Spotify's algorithm optimizes best in campaigns of 2 to 4 weeks. Squeezing the same budget into 3 days means shutting the algorithm down before it has a chance to learn. A 15-day setup is the most balanced option for most single releases.

A common mistake: Piling the budget onto release day. A song's first week matters, but Spotify ads pay off through the algorithm's learning, not a short-lived burst. Spreading the budget over 2 weeks brings more real listeners for the same money.

Targeting: who are you reaching?

Spotify's targeting options are more powerful than most artists realize. Beyond classic breakdowns like age, gender, country and city, there are music-specific layers: the genre being listened to, the listener's mood at that moment, listeners of similar artists, listening habits and platform type.

In practice, this means you don't show an arabesk ad to a pop listener. You define the profile where your song will genuinely land and concentrate the budget there. Your song's credits and genre tag are the first link in this chain. A song uploaded with the wrong credits reaches the wrong ears in ads, too. That's why the work actually starts at the music distribution stage.

No matter how good the targeting is, ads can't save a song that doesn't hook. If listeners skip in the first seconds, the budget is wasted. I covered this in detail in my 30-second rule and why isn't my song getting streams articles.

Who prepares which assets?

The ad assets are supplied by the advertiser. Depending on the format, you'll need:

  • A high-quality audio file of the song
  • A music video or vertical/horizontal video for the Video format
  • 640x640 pixel cover art for Audio and Display
  • 2 to 6 images for Carousel

The one exception is voiceover. Professional Turkish or English voiceover for Audio ads is produced free of charge by Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager). The script is written, then recorded and mixed to Spotify's 15-30 second audio ad standard. There's no extra production cost for the artist.

Prerequisite: The ad's click destination must be a Spotify link. It can be a song, album, artist profile or playlist, but the content has to be live on Spotify first. You can't advertise a song that hasn't been distributed yet.

From application to live: 3 business days

Here's how the process works:

  • 1. Brief and strategy: The song, target market, budget and goal are defined. This is where the format is chosen.
  • 2. Creative production: Images are resized to spec, and if Audio is used, the voiceover script is written and recorded.
  • 3. Spotify approval: The creatives are uploaded to the platform. Approval takes 24 to 48 hours.
  • 4. Launch: On average, the campaign goes live within 3 business days of applying.
  • 5. Optimization: Performance is monitored throughout the campaign, underperforming ad sets are paused and budget is shifted to what's working.
  • 6. Reporting: At the end of the campaign, you receive a performance report covering impressions, reach, CTR, unique listeners and a country breakdown. For longer campaigns, weekly interim reports are also sent.

The 6 most common mistakes

  • Squeezing the budget into a single day. The campaign ends before the algorithm can learn.
  • Putting budget behind a song that doesn't hook. Ads buy visibility, not quality.
  • Leaving targeting too broad. Targeting "everyone" means reaching no one.
  • A song released with the wrong credits. If the genre tag is wrong, the ad reaches the wrong ears too.
  • Leaving creatives to the last minute. Spotify approval takes 24-48 hours and won't be ready in time for release day.
  • Thinking ads alone are a strategy. Ads are one layer. They work together with distribution, credits, pitching and the release plan.

Spotify Advertising partnership

Digitalent Music has formed a partnership with Spotify Advertising to strengthen its releases. A song released through Digitalent Music gains access, from day one, to promotional tools that boost reach:

  • Targeted ad campaigns to reach the ideal audience
  • Editorial playlist pitches with optimized submissions
  • Pre-save campaign integration
  • Comprehensive streaming analytics

In practice, this means that when distribution and advertising are in the same hands, every link in the chain, from credits to targeting, is set up to work together. For detailed format info, a live reach calculator and the application form, see digitalent.music/spotify-ads.

Is Spotify Ads enough on its own?

No. Spotify has three different tools, and each one does a different job.

Spotify Ads opens you up to new audiences. You appear in front of listeners who've never heard of you. Spotify Marquee reminds users who've already shown interest in you about your new release with a full-screen recommendation; it's the most powerful tool for turning them into lasting listeners, but it can't target Türkiye and has eligibility requirements. Spotify Discovery Mode requires no upfront fee; instead, it takes a commission from your royalties and boosts the song in algorithmic contexts like Radio and Autoplay.

The right strategy comes down to sequencing these three based on where the song stands. I explained how ads trigger the algorithm in my Spotify Ads article, and the full picture of building lasting listeners in how to grow monthly listeners.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum budget for Spotify Ads?

$500. Below that, the algorithm can't gather enough data, making meaningful results hard to achieve. The most common starting budget is around $1,000.

When will my ad go live?

Once the creatives are ready, Spotify's approval takes 24 to 48 hours. On average, the campaign goes live within 3 business days of applying.

Can I only advertise in Türkiye?

No. Because Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager) is a US-based account, campaigns can run in more than 180 countries, including Türkiye. You specify the target market in your application.

Can I advertise if my song isn't on Spotify yet?

No. The ad's click destination must be a Spotify link, so your content has to be live first. For the distribution side, see my music distribution service.

How many streams will the ad bring?

No one can honestly guarantee that, and if someone does, stay away. What ads deliver is reach and clicks. Whether the person who clicks listens to the end, saves the song and comes back depends entirely on the song itself. Before a campaign, I give an estimated reach range based on past data; I don't promise stream counts.

How does reporting work?

At the end of the campaign, you receive a performance report covering impressions, reach, CTR, unique listeners and a country breakdown. For longer campaigns, weekly interim reports can also be sent.

In short

Spotify Ads is a channel most artists in Türkiye either don't know about or dismiss as "not for us." Yet it's the only ad environment where the listener is already in music mode. It has a $500 minimum, clear technical specs and measurable numbers. With the right format, the right targeting and a budget spread over 2-4 weeks, it's the most direct way to reach real, organic listeners.

I set up this process one-on-one with every artist. With the resources of strong infrastructure (a Universal Music partnership, Gizli Medya in Türkiye, Digitalent Inc. (Digital Marketing Manager) in the USA), but with the approach of an advisor who makes time for every project. Tell me about your song, your target market and your budget, and we'll design a campaign tailored to you.
