Can a Song Work Without a Video? Music First, Video Later

Serdar Sağlam, Music Strategist & Digital Marketing Manager

I have a lot to say to artists who insist "I won't release a song without a music video." That mindset is a holdover from the music industry of years ago. Back then there was television, there were music channels, and without a video there was no outlet to show the song. But today Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and other platforms take your song to millions without a video. A music video isn't a requirement; it's a strategic choice.

A music video is an expensive investment. A professional shoot in Türkiye can cost anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of lira. And the return on that investment is entirely uncertain. Plenty of artists have poured big money into a video only to watch the song flop. Had they put the same money into a marketing budget, the song would have reached far more people.

Test the Song First, Then Think About the Video

The right strategy is this: release the song first, track the streaming data, see which song people want, and then shoot a video for that song. Data-driven decisions are always more reliable than gut-driven ones. Instead of shooting videos for four songs from an album, focusing on the single most-streamed song uses the budget efficiently and maximizes impact.

Shooting a video for every song is a waste of both budget and time. Music first, visuals second; that order shouldn't change. A video is a tool that supports a song's success, not what creates it. Artists who understand this difference use their resources much more wisely and move faster in their careers.
